About RNS
The Swedish National Association for a Drug-free Society (RNS) is a Swedish popular movement campaigning against illicit drugs founded in 1969 by Nils Bejerot, a physician. Today we have some 10,000 members throughout Sweden. We do not have any religious or party-political affiliations.
Restrictive drugs policy and early interventionRNS sees its main task as lobbying for a restrictive drugs policy in Sweden, by which we mean that all abuse of illicit drugs must be combated. Establishing preventive measures against drug abuse is important, as is consistent, early intervention wherever it occurs. Our goal, of course, must be to persuade young people never to try drugs in the first place.
Dependent on its membersRNS has decided not to accept any of the state grants which are available. We want to remain as independent as possible of the national decision-making authorities which we scrutinise and on occasion criticise. This makes us heavily dependent on our members.
Democratic struggleRNS is not an organisation representing the interests of any particular professional or other group. Our aim is to unite all democratically-minded people in the struggle for a drug-free society, irrespective of their views on other political issues.
Courses and lecturesRNS arranges courses and seminars. A large number of experts throughout the country, linked to the organisation, are available for lecturing on a wide variety of subjects. These include addiction, narcotic substances, drugs policy, the treatment of offenders, legislation, local anti-drug intitiatives, and drugs in the workplace.
The Drug BoxRNS produced the first edition of its Drug Box in 1996. This information package is now to be found in over half of all schools in Sweden. The second edition consists of 15 booklets on a variety of drug-related subjects. It has also been adapted and translated into Russian.
The RNS magazineOur magazine Narkotikafrågan appears bimonthly. Here you can meet the people who work with drugs issues on a daily basis or who are themselves caught up in the problem. There are also reports, information, debates and presentations of scientific research.
Support RNS's important workRNS is working for a better future. What can be more important than striving to achieve a secure future for our children and young people? A drug abuser does not live in a vacuum. Drug abuse causes untold suffering among family and friends.
